Subject: your DOC paper

Hi students!  As you know, your DOC 1 paper is due to your TA before lecture Monday.  If you didn’t get the pink instruction sheet for using Turnitin.com today, please get it from the Handouts page of the DOC website:

http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/doc1Handouts.shtml.  (Or you can pick it up Monday from the DOC office.)  You need the code numbers on the back of this instruction sheet in order to properly submit your paper online, which is a requirement of the course.

Although the deadline for submitting your DOC paper to the Turnitin website is “before 4:00 p.m.” on Monday, I recommend that you do it EARLIER in the day.    As soon as you print out your paper to bring to your TA, go ahead and submit it electronically then.  (You can even do it Sunday night if you want.)

Please copy the following statement onto the end of your paper.  Then don’t forget to SIGN it when you print it out.   “My signature affirms that I will uphold the agreements stated and not violate the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code.”

Reminder: Dr. Terrence Roberts’ Keynote Address is tonight at 7:30 in the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre.  Since this event is open to the public, please arrive EARLY.  The Forum Theatre is on the other side (south) of CLICS.

(Type it into “I am looking for:” at http://maps.ucsd.edu/Default.htm.) Give yourself PLENTY of time to find it -- the entrance is hidden behind a long "fence" thing that is mirrored.  (To add to the confusion, the Forum Theatre is NOT the only theatre over there!)

As Dr. Shragge noted on the e-mail we sent on October 9, DOC 1 students will have a choice on the final exam to answer a question about one of the three required events.  --Sue at DOC

P.S. I have not been able to access the docinfo@ucsd e-mail account for the last few days.  So I apologize if you were expecting a reply to your individual message.

DOC instructor Dr. Lynn Ta will present EYES ON THE PRIZE (30 minute screening) tonight (Wednesday 11/7) 214 Center Hall at 7:30 PM

Q & A with UCSD undergrads to follow.

The PBS special “Episode 2: Fighting Back (1957-1962)” features Little Rock’s Central High School incident. For those DOC students going to the Tuesday or Wednesday evening events next week, seeing this video tonight will be a helpful preparation. For more information on this episode and the whole series, see:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/eyesontheprize/about/index.html

"Fighting Back (1957-1962) - States' rights loyalists and federal authorities collide in the 1957 battle to integrate Little Rock's Central High School, and again in James Meredith's 1962 challenge to segregation at the University of Mississippi. Both times, a Southern governor squares off with a U.S. president, violence erupts -- and integration is carried out."

Editorial Review from Amazon.com:

"One of the essential documentary series from 20th-century television, Eyes on the Prize is an extraordinary, grassroots history of the civil rights movement in 1950s and '60s America. Leaving punditry and debate to others, this six-hour program concerns itself with the individuals who were there, who participated on the front lines, who witnessed and survived to tell about the crusade's tragedies and victories. Starting with a pair of mid-'50s heroic actions in the South that helped galvanize black and white activism against institutional racism (actions that included Rosa Parks's refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama), the series winds its way through the exponential growth of the movement to the passage of the Voting Rights Act and beyond. The epochal battle between states-rights advocates and federal authorities is well-covered, as are the many sacrifices made and enormous risks taken by Mississippi Freedom Riders and advocates of black voter registration. --Tom Keogh"

Hi students!  Don't forget to BRING WRITING EXERCISE #2 with you to CLICS this week!  This is the blue handout that you received in your first discussion section meeting.  If you don’t have it, please go to http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/doc1Handouts.shtml and print it out.

Yes, all DOC 1 students are required to attend the Library Orientation at the Center for Library & Instructional Computing Services (CLICS).  Please read the back of Writing Exercise #1 (yellow handout) carefully (or print out “CLICS Schedule for Library Orientation” from the Handouts page).  CLICS is located in Galbraith Hall on the Revelle campus.  If you need to, go to www.maps.ucsd.edu and type in Galbraith where it says “I Am Looking For...”  Last year someone clocked it and said that it takes at LEAST 12 minutes to walk from Sequoyah Hall to Galbraith, at a good pace.  So please plan to give yourself extra time to get there.   --Sue at DOC

P.S.  Writing Exercise #1 was due today.  If you didn’t give it to your TA in lecture (and he/she hasn’t instructed you otherwise), you may bring it to the DOC main office, Sequoyah Hall 132.  Make sure your TA’s name is on it.  If you come between 8:30 and 5:00, put your work in the “pretty box” right inside the door. If it’s after hours, put it through the mailslot in the door.

Hi students!  Please take a moment now to write your contact info (at least print your name) in/on ALL your books, binders, backpacks, calculators, umbrellas, etc.  (Wouldn't you hate to misplace a quarter's worth of lecture notes the week before the final exam, and know that you never got around to putting your name on your binder?)

Also be sure that your phone number is up-to-date on TritonLink.  If we find a name on lost items, I can look you up and contact you.  Otherwise unidentified belongings get sent to UCSD's Lost & Found office, which is located at the Police Station in the Campus Services Complex (858-534-4361).

While you're at it, please program an "ICE" number in your cell phone.    This stands for "in case of emergency," but it can also be helpful if you lose your phone.    (Just be sure that your parents have another number at which to reach you, so that if we call them they can contact you to tell you we have your phone!) --Sue at DOC

Hi students!  You can no longer add a DOC 1 section yourself via WebReg.  Please see me in the DOC main office* as soon as possible if you have a schedule conflict with either your DOC 1 section or DOC 1 lecture.

In your discussion section this week, you will get the handouts listed on the syllabus (and more!).  One thing that we will NOT be distributing on paper is the Steps for Note-Taking in Lecture, so you may want to print that out from the Handouts page of the DOC website: http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/doc1Handouts.shtml.  (DOC recommends that you consider taking lecture notes this way, but we don’t require it if you have another system that works for you.)

On Wednesday in lecture we'll have a chart on the screen showing where each TA's students will sit in the lecture hall, STARTING FRIDAY October 5.  Please look on your Class List now and notice in what SECTION NUMBER you're enrolled.  You will need to know, for example, that you are enrolled in "section A14," NOT that you're in "the section that meets Wednesdays at 10:00," since there may be more than one section at that time.  (Please note that your Weekly Planner does NOT indicate your section number -- you have to look at your Class List on TritonLink.)  --Sue at DOC

Subject: DOC classes this week

Hi students!  Today (Thursday, September 27) is officially the first day of instruction at UCSD, but this is referred to as “Week Zero.”  As published in the Schedule of Classes, DOC discussion sections do NOT meet this week. So even if you are enrolled in a DOC 1 discussion section that is scheduled for Thursdays or Fridays, it will NOT

meet this week.  DOC 1 sections will have their first meetings “Week One” – on Wednesday (10/03/07) OR Thursday (10/04/07) OR Friday (10/05/07).

Everyone enrolled in DOC 1 should go to the first LECTURE on Friday, September 28.  There is a possibility that our 1:00 lecture will need to change locations –- keep checking your e-mail between now and then.  It is always a good idea to print out a NEW “Weekly Planner” from TritonLink at the beginning of the quarter.  Some of your other classes may have changed times or rooms since you enrolled in them.

Please look at your Class List on TritonLink and look in the column under “Subj/Instr/Mtg Type.” LE means it’s a lecture, DI means “discussion section.” Those of you who have already walked around and found all your classrooms probably noticed that lectures are in bigger rooms than discussion sections.  (If you haven’t yet

found all your classrooms in person, please do so TODAY, so you aren’t late for class the first day!  You should plan to do this before EVERY quarter.)

You might hear from other students that “discussion sections never meet the first week of classes.”  This may be true SOMETIMES.  But I always say – unless you get that information from an official source (e.g., the department or professor) – go ahead and GO the first week (or Week Zero)!  Better safe than sorry!  If you go to class and the Professor or Teaching Assistant doesn’t show up within the first 15 minutes, you may assume that class is not being held that day. To clarify, I’m talking here about classes BESIDES DOC 1.   I will always notify you via e-mail about things like this for DOC, as I’ve done here.  --Sue at DOC, An “official source,” Sequoyah Hall 132

Hi DOC students!  By now you should all have the “Raimes” book (Keys for Writers, 5th edition) from the UCSD Bookstore.  And I know that a lot of you were able to pick up your DOC 1 Reader last night from Oceanview Lounge.  If you have ordered your reader but not picked it up yet, watch for an e-mail from University Readers.  On your “Pick-Up Confirmation Slip” be sure to click on the link in the body of the message to find out where and when you can get YOUR book.

On Friday, the DOC 1 lectures will start in Peterson Hall 110. A course syllabus will be distributed before lecture, detailing the assignments, etc.   It is not a requirement that you start reading before the first lecture, but I know some of you want to get a head-start.  Remember that I’m only the secretary, but I recommend that you read the following before FRIDAY (September 28):

The Previews on pages 1 and 3 of your DOC 1 Reader. In Keys for Writers, 5th edition (the chapter numbers are in red squares at the top of the pages): Chapter 8a: “Reading Sources Critically, ” Chapter 9a-b: “Avoiding Plagiarism, ” Chapter 9g: “Quoting”

Then before MONDAY (October 1), you will need to read the first four readings in the DOC 1 Reader (the authors/editors are: Kennedy, Bloom, Lorde, and Hall), and these chapters in Raimes: Chapter 1d:  specifically “Journals, blogs, and online conversations, ” Chapter 2e: “Writing introductions and conclusions,” Chapter 3f: “Formatting a college essay (print)”

Hi DOC students!  This is the first of many e-mail messages which I'll be sending you throughout the year while you're enrolled in DOC.  I'm Sue Hawkinson, the Program Assistant (secretary) of the Dimensions of Culture Program.  Please feel free contact me at the docinfo@ucsd.edu address with any questions you may have about DOC.

You may have noticed on the UCSD Bookstore’s textbook list (linked on the Schedule of Classes) that one of the required books for DOC 1 will be available directly from the publisher, “University Readers.”  This is a private company that is not a part of UCSD.  The only way to get your DOC 1 Reader is by ordering it through their website, as instructed below.

If you will be living in the residence halls or apartments ON campus, you will be able to pick up your DOC 1 Reader from University Readers at a specific time and location here on campus, starting Wednesday, September 26.  (When you order, be sure to indicate at which college you LIVE – either Marshall or Revelle.)  If you will be living OFF campus, use the mailing address that you would for any other package – your DOC 1 Reader will come to you in the mail within a few days of your order.

For Frequently Asked Questions go to:  http://www.universityreaders.com/pdf/doc_faq.pdf

No matter where you live, as soon as your order is processed by University Readers, you will be able to access the first few articles of the DOC 1 Reader electronically!  That’s right, you will be able to get a head-start on your reading before you even step foot on campus!

The other required book for DOC 1, _Keys for Writers_, is available through the UCSD Bookstore, either through their Textbook Reservation Service, or directly from their store in the Price Center on campus. (This book is also required for DOC 2 and DOC 3.)

Please do go ahead and order your DOC 1 Reader now (see information from University Readers below).
