Subject: final exam reminders

Reminder:  Since your TA will be bringing the bluebooks to the final exam, the ONLY things you need to bring to the lecture hall are:  PENS/pencils and your house/car KEY!

If for some reason you need to bring something else, you will need to put it on the floor in the front or back of the lecture hall before the exam can be distributed.  This includes (but is not limited to):

backpacks, purses, binders, books, papers, cell phones, electronic dictionaries, I-Pods, MP3 players, Blackberries, earphones, cameras, and notes of any kind.  DOC has a zero-tolerance policy with regard to any and all electronic devices in the lecture hall during the exam period.  If you have one at your seat during the exam, it will be confiscated, and you will run the risk of getting a zero (worse than an F) on the exam. Don’t risk it – leave these things at home!

Remember that it is against the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code for students to “receive or provide unauthorized assistance in examinations,” and to “use unauthorized materials during an examination.”

Set your alarm clocks.    The final exam times are firm.        If you show up two hours late to your exam, you will only have one hour to complete it.  If you miss it altogether, you will receive an F for your course grade, unless you have a verifiable, documented emergency which falls under the University’s criteria for a grade of Incomplete.  Good luck!  (And have a Happy St. Patrick's Day!)

Subject: submitting your second paper

Hi students!  As you know, your second paper is due on Wednesday, March 5, before the start of lecture.  Per your TA’s instructions, you will give him/her all of the following:  your Final Draft, Thesis & Plan, Rough Draft, Peer Reviews, and Evaluation Rubric form.

Don’t forget to include this statement at the end of your paper, and sign it: “My signature affirms that I will uphold the agreements stated and not violate the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code.”

It is a requirement of the course that you also submit an electronic copy of your paper to Turnitin.com before 4:00 PM Wednesday.  Since you already “joined a class” when you submitted your first DOC 2 paper to Turnitin.com, you won’t need those enrollment numbers on the back of the instruction sheet.  But if you forgot how to submit your paper, you can access the instructions on the Handouts page (under Week 4):

http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/DOC2Handouts.php

Please go ahead and submit your paper online as soon as you have printed out your final copy and know that you won’t be making any more changes (for example, do it Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning).  Last time some students had problems with Turnitin.com being very slow or unresponsive at certain times of the day, but they were successful if they just kept trying.

If you fail to submit your paper to Turnitin.com by 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 5, your paper’s GRADE WILL BE LOWERED by one-third of a letter grade.  Then the penalty will increase for every 24 hour period until you meet the requirement.  (Turnitin.com records the exact time a paper gets submitted, so your TA will know.)

This happened to several students with their first papers – don’t let it happen to you!  --Sue at DOC

Hi students!  This is just a reminder for those of you who signed up to attend the screening of _No! The Rape Documentary_ tonight.  Please arrive at the Multipurpose Room of the Student Services Center before 6:00 PM.

Afterwards, look for the person handing out the red Certificates of Attendance.

I was GOING to give you a link to UCSD’s map site, so you could see where the building is, but – to my utter surprise – the Student Services Center doesn’t show up on most maps because it’s “new.”  But it’s easy to find across Myers Drive from the Chancellor’s office, southeast from the Price Center.

If you still haven’t signed up for an event, there are still spaces left for some of them.  See the DOC website’s Events page:    http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/events.php  --Sue at DOC

Subject: clarification re: DOC/BHM Events

Hi students!  Please sign up for only ONE Black History Month event for DOC credit.      **IF** you have signed up for more than one, please e-mail me your name, PID, and the one event that you DO want to attend, and I will cancel your registration for the other(s).  Three extra percentage points is the maximum that you can earn.

If you want to attend the February 24 play, _Permanent Collection_, sign up online first, then bring your $5 (cash or check) to me in the DOC main office.  You can come between 9:00 and 12:30, or 1:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday.  All payment for the play must be received before 4:30 Friday, February 22.  If the online sign-up for this event becomes full, I will start a waitlist in case someone signs up but fails to pay by the deadline.

If you want to attend either of the "Tentacle Sessions, featuring DBR + DJ Scientific" performances, sign up online first, then bring your $5 and Student ID card to the Price Center Box Office next to Jamba Juice (M-F 10-5, Sat 10-1) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Your signing up using the UCSD Event Registration System does not guarantee you a ticket, and the Box Office might sell out since these events are open to the public.  Have a great weekend!  --Sue at DOC

Subject: your first DOC 2 paper!

Hi students!  As you know, your first DOC 2 paper is due to your TA before lecture Monday.  If you didn’t get the goldenrod instruction sheet for using Turnitin.com today, please print it from the Handouts page of the DOC website: http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/DOC2Handouts.php.  (Or you can pick it up Monday from the DOC office.)  You need the code numbers on the back of this instruction sheet in order to properly submit your paper online, which is a requirement of the course.

Although the deadline for submitting your DOC paper to the Turnitin website is “before 4:00 p.m.” on Monday, I recommend that you do it EARLIER in the day.    As soon as you print out your paper to bring to your TA, go ahead and submit it electronically then.  (You can even do it Sunday night if you want.)  If you do not meet the Turnitin requirement by the deadline, YOUR PAPER GRADE WILL BE LOWERED by one-third of a grade!  And that penalty will increase with every day that passes before you fulfill the requirement.

Review “The Writing Process, Continued” handout on the DOC website, especially the “Grading” box at the end, if you haven’t already.

Please copy the following statement onto the end of your paper.  Then don’t forget to SIGN it when you print it out.  “My signature affirms that I will uphold the agreements stated and not violate the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code.”  --Sue at DOC

Subject: Corrected Reading: Letter from Birmingham Jail

Hi students!  You may have heard that there are some errors in the version of MLK’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” that is printed in the 2008 DOC 2 Reader.  (These errors actually appear on many copies of this piece that are on the internet!)  Of course our faculty would like you to read a CORRECT version!  There are two ways you can do that:

1.      If you don’t mind reading the text on your computer screen, you can access it here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/popular_requests/frequentdocs/birmingham.pdf  (Note that Stanford will not allow you to print or copy from this page – you must read it on the screen.)

** OR **

2.      University Readers has updated the pdf of the first 20% of the readings that they sent you when you purchased the DOC 2 Reader online to include the corrected version of this Birmingham Jail piece.  Use the same link to the pdf that University Readers sent you previously, and scroll down to the pdf’s page 88.  (The print function of Adobe Reader should allow you to select specific pages if you want to print it.)  If you have trouble with this option, contact Tricia at info@universityreaders.com.

Subject: last chance to add DOC 2

Hi!  After 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 11, you will no longer be able to add a DOC 2 section via WebReg.  So everyone needs to be enrolled in their permanent section before then.  Please look now to see if any of the openings work in your schedule.  If so, go ahead and add the class, even if you would RATHER have a different section.  Your other option is to take DOC 2 in 2009.  If you have concerns (or if you’re a graduating Senior), please come see me in Sequoyah Hall 132 between 9:00 and 12:30, or 1:30 to 5:00.

Friday is also the last day that the bluebooks from last quarter (DOC 1) will be outside my office for pick up.  Come get yours if you haven’t already. --Sue at DOC

Subject: important: DOC 2 sections!!!

Hi students!  DOC 2 discussion sections DO meet Week 1!!!  So your first section will be either TODAY (Tuesday, January 8), or tomorrow (Wednesday, January 9).  Then you’ll meet AGAIN on either Thursday or Friday this week – this is a 6-unit course, remember.  Your TA will take attendance in section, and if you fail to show up, you will be in danger of LOSING YOUR SPACE to another student who wants in the class!

Remember how you walked around and found all your classrooms before classes started in September?  Well, you should do that EVERY quarter!  You don’t want to be late to class because you couldn’t find the room – duh!

Print out a new copy of your Weekly Planner from WebReg – some of your classes may have moved (and not all departments will e-mail you about it).

If you have not already ordered the 2008 DOC 2 Reader from University Readers, please do so now: http://universityreaders.com/students.

If you missed getting the syllabus Monday in lecture, please print it out from the DOC website: http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/doc2.php.

Hi DOC 2 students! One of the required books for DOC 2 is available directly from the publisher, "University Readers." This is a private company that is not a part of UCSD. The only way to get your DOC 2 Reader is by ordering it through their website, as instructed below. Please go ahead and order it NOW.

If you live in the residence halls or apartments ON campus, you will be able to pick up your DOC 2 Reader from University Readers at a specific time and location here on campus. (When you order, be sure to indicate at which college you LIVE - either Marshall or Revelle.) If you live OFF campus, use the local mailing address that you would for any other package - your DOC 2 Reader will come to you in the mail within a few days of your order.

No matter where you live, as soon as your order is processed by University Readers, you will be able to access the first several articles of the DOC 2 Reader electronically!

The other required book for DOC 2, _Keys for Writers 5th edition_, is available through the UCSD Bookstore, if you don't already have it from DOC 1. You should go ahead and skim chapters 37 through 58 in this book now - look for the chapter numbers in gold squares next to the page numbers. --Sue at DOC
