Subject: final exam reminders

Hi students!  Remember that since your TA will be bringing the bluebooks to the final exam, the ONLY things you need to bring to the lecture hall are:
PENS/pencils and your house/car KEY!

If for some reason you need to bring something else, you will need to put it on the floor in the front or back of the lecture hall before the exam can be distributed.  This includes (but is not limited to): backpacks, purses, binders, books, papers, cell phones, electronic dictionaries, I-Pods, MP3 players, Blackberries, earphones, cameras, and notes of any kind.  DOC has a zero-tolerance policy with regard to any and all electronic devices in the lecture hall during the exam period.

If you have one at your seat during the exam, it will be confiscated, and you will run the risk of getting a zero (worse than an F) on the exam.  Don't risk it - leave these things at home!

Remember that it is against the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code for students to "receive or provide unauthorized assistance in examinations," and to "use unauthorized materials during an examination."

Set your alarm clocks.    The final exam times are firm.        If you show up
two hours late to your exam, you will only have one hour to complete it.  If you miss it altogether, you will receive an F for your course grade, unless you have a verifiable, documented emergency which falls under the University's criteria for a grade of Incomplete.    Good luck!     --Sue at DOC

Subject: finals week complications

Hi students!  If you live off campus, PLEASE pay attention to the warnings about traffic due to the US Open at Torrey Pines!  Apparently Thursday and Friday will be the worst days - expect all roads around UCSD (including Gilman Drive, North Torrey Pines Road, and the freeway itself) to be completely blocked by traffic to and from the golf tournament.  If you live close enough to walk or ride a bike, I'd advise you to do that (but still plan on it taking an extra hour or so to get to campus).  Another option: if you have friends who live ON campus, ask them if you can sleep on their floor the night before you have an 8:00 or 11:30 AM exam.

If you don't already have a UCSD parking permit, you will need to show a valid UCSD ID card in order to pay to park in any spots that usually have parking meters or are marked for visitors.  See http://usopen.ucsd.edu/

Remember that the University is saying that if you are late for an exam you will NOT get extra time to take it - even if you were stuck in traffic with thousands of other students and golf spectators.  Yikes!      --Sue at DOC

P.S.  I will be taking vacation time or working from home during part of the week -- please leave a message at (858) 534-2742 and I will get back to you.  (I won't be able to access e-mail 24/7.)

Subject: your first DOC 3 paper!

Hi students!  As you know, your first DOC 3 paper is due to your TA before lecture MONDAY.  Per your TA's instructions, you will give him/her all of the following:  your Final Draft, Thesis & Plan, Rough Draft, Peer Reviews, and Evaluation Rubric form.

If you didn't get the instruction sheet for using Turnitin.com, please print it from the Handouts page of the DOC website:
http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/DOC3HandoutsS08.php.  (Or you can pick it up Monday from the DOC office.)  You need the code numbers on the back of this instruction sheet in order to properly submit your paper online, which is a requirement of the course.  Although the deadline for submitting your DOC paper to the Turnitin website is "before 4:00 p.m." on Monday, I recommend that you do NOT wait until Monday afternoon.  As soon as you print out your paper to bring to your TA, go ahead and submit it electronically then.  (You can even do it Sunday evening if you want.)  If you do not meet the Turnitin requirement by the deadline, YOUR PAPER GRADE WILL BE LOWERED by one-third of a grade!  And that penalty will increase with every day that passes before you fulfill the requirement.

Review "The Writing Process Continues" handout on the DOC website, especially the "Grading" box at the end, if you haven't already.

Please copy the following statement onto the end of your paper.  Then don't forget to SIGN it when you print it out.  "My signature affirms that I will uphold the agreements stated and not violate the Thurgood Marshall College Academic Honor Code."      --Sue at DOC

Subject: books required for DOC 3

Hi students!  All three DOC 3 lecturers are assigning the book The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin.  This book is on the textbook shelves at the UCSD Bookstore in the Price Center.

You may have noticed that each lecturer is also assigning a different novel later in the quarter.  Please go ahead and purchase the novel for your class NOW.  The bookstore will NOT keep textbooks on their shelves all quarter.  (They actually pack up the “leftovers” that haven’t sold and send them back to the publishers starting Week 5.)

So if you haven’t already purchased them, in the next week or so you should go to the bookstore and get The Fire Next Time and ONE of the following novels:

The Road by McCarthy for Dr. Gilson’s lecture
      or
The Vine of Desire for Dr. Shragge’s lecture
      or
Bone for Dr. Ta’s lecture

Please see your syllabus for more information.     --Sue at DOC

Subject: DOC 3 films

Hi students!  Arrangements have not yet been made to show any of the DOC 3 films on TM-TV (Marshall Television).  I'll let you know the schedule if/when that happens.

In the meantime, if you have REAL PLAYER you should be able to view the films on your computer.  Follow the instructions at the top of the Handouts page (the password is DOC3), and the instructions the Library provides once you enter the site.  When you get to a page that says "Document Info" I think you have to click on the link near the bottom that says "click here for more information" in order to bring up the film.

The Graduate will be shown in Peterson Hall 108 on Monday and Tuesday next week at 8:00 PM.  I would recommend going to one of those screenings if you can -- a faculty member will be there to introduce the film and give you an idea of what to look for.

If you ordered your DOC reader but haven't received the necessary Pick-Up Confirmation Slip, please contact webmaster@universityreaders.com.  Have a fun and productive weekend!   --Sue at DOC

Subject: E-Reserves texts

Hi students!  You can access texts marked "E-Reserves" in your syllabus by going to the DOC website's Handouts/Texts page:
http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/DOC3HandoutsS08.php  Read the information on the top of the page.

If you want to stay in DOC 3 this quarter, do NOT drop your section and put yourself on a waitlist for another.  If you do so, there are NO GUARANTEES that you will be able to get into a class -- you might have to wait until Spring 2009.   --Sue at DOC

Subject: get ready for DOC 3

Hi DOC 3 students!  Remember that DOC sections do meet Week 1, starting either April 1 or April 2. Your TA will take roll, and it will count as one of your absences if you don’t show up.  You will also be in danger of losing your space in the class, since we have many students on waitlists who are trying to get in.

Students will be looking at advertisements in section, so we’ll be asking you to bring in magazines.  If you’re still at home for spring break right now, go ahead and raid your parents’ recycling pile for whatever magazines you can find!

If you haven’t taken DOC 1 or DOC 2, please plan to read chapters 37-58 in Ann Raimes’ _Keys for Writers_ on your own.  If English is not your first language, please skim chapters 59-64 as well.  (The chapter numbers are found in red or gold boxes at the top of the pages in this book.)     --Sue at DOC

P.S. Friday, March 28, is a University holiday, so the DOC office will be closed.

Subject: textbooks for DOC 3

Hi DOC 3 students! One of the required books for DOC 3 is available directly from the publisher, “University Readers.”  This is a private company that is not a part of UCSD.  The ONLY way to get your DOC 3 Reader is by ordering it through their website, as instructed below.  Please go ahead and order it NOW.

If you live in the residence halls or apartments ON campus, you will be able to pick up your DOC 3 Reader from University Readers at a specific time and location here on campus, starting Sunday evening March 30.  If you live OFF campus, use the local mailing address that you would for any other package – your DOC 3 Reader will come to you in the mail within a few days of your order.

No matter where you live, as soon as your order is processed by University Readers, you will be able to access the first several articles of the DOC 3 Reader electronically!

Other required books for DOC 3 are available through the UCSD Bookstore.  Please note that the reader, Raimes’ _Keys for Writers_, and Baldwin’s _The Fire Next Time_ are required for all three lectures of DOC 3. But each professor is also requiring another novel, specific to his/her lecture.  Check the shelf labels at the bookstore or consult your syllabus that you will receive at the first lecture on March 31.    --Sue at DOC
