Office of the Provost
A message from Provost Allan Havis
It is a special joy to welcome all the new and continuing students to Thurgood Marshall. Clearly college is an extraordinary rite of passage that will last a lifetime. TMC has a great legacy to promote cultural tolerance, social equality, and civic justice. A brilliant education is the most loving of gifts; the diverse intellectual, social, and artistic community at Marshall is our greatest source of pride. Further, according to a recent U.S. News & World Report survey, UCSD ranked seventh among the best public universities in the nation.
In continuing the fine tradition established by former TMC Provost Cecil Lytle, I intend to meet informally with students throughout the year to talk and to listen about all things of interest.
Our motto at Thurgood Marshall College is "The student as scholar and citizen," and you will find here a fascinating twining of the two. Our TMC staff is extremely attuned, committed, and caring. We strive as the best professionals. The opportunities in front of us on and off campus are thoroughly exciting. We strongly believe that each of you can help cultivate and define the world you will soon inherit. With wit and with wisdom, the wonderful Marshall adventure begins.
To quote American poet Langston Hughes:
"Hold fast to dreams,
for if dreams die,
life is a broken winged bird
that cannot fly."
