DOC 100: Special Topics in Diversity, Justice, and Imagination
DOC 100 is an elective upper-division course for which the course content will vary from quarter to quarter.
Fall Quarter 2009 = "Diversity, Justice and Public Service": This course will explore the literature and theory of civil society, human capital, social diversity and social justice as they intersect with contemporary concepts and practices in the field of public service. In addition, the course will prepare students for an optional public-service internship enabling participants to put principles learned during the course into action. A series of writing exercises culminating in a term paper is a significant component of the course.
Winter Quarter 2010 = "War, Identity and Imagination in Contemporary American Society": This course consists of lectures, discussions, readings, film and other media presentations that will examine some of the cultural mythologies surrounding war and American society as they have evolved during the past century. It will explore the interpretation of signs and symbols of war as they appear in popular culture, and the impact of war on American conceptions of identity and justice. Other topics include militarism, patriotism, the impact of the nation’s wars on class relations, ideologies of race and gender, and relationships between the nation’s history and current events. A series of writing exercises culminating in a term paper is a significant component of the course.
