Clues to Uncover the Mystery of Freshman Academic Success from Anne Porter, Dean, TMC Academic Advising
Here are some brief tips parents might want to keep in mind when encouraging their students who find they are indeed in an academically challenging environment!
Encourage participation in programs and services!
- Enrollment Procedures for the Second Quarter
- Undeclared Majors Workshop
- Career Services Center Workshops
- Department Information Sessions
- Education Abroad Program
Encourage participation in supportive actions to build better academic skills and understanding.
- Attend class on a regular basis
- Form Study Groups
- Use OASIS (Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services)
- Go to Professor and TA office hours
- Take a Freshman Seminar ("the 87's")
Encourage your student to take this special course to "learn how to learn".
- TMC 10, Methods of Inquiry
- And, students should certainly stop by the Academic Advising Office.
- College Advisors are available on an appointment and walk-in basis (Help Desk).
Encourage your student's use of University resources! The best place to begin to look is on the TMC website!
Encourage your students to see the College and Department Academic Advisors at least once a year!
Encourage your student to explore and get actively involved in their education. He or she will be the beneficiary of his/her efforts. First stop: Academic Advising Office - some time during the first year.
