Eligibility

To qualify for TMCHP as an incoming freshman a student must have achieved an evaluated:
  • high school GPA of 3.8 or higher and,
  • mathematics SAT score of 700 or better and,
  • reading SAT scores of 700 or better and,
  • writing SAT scores of 700 or better.
Continuing UC San Diego students are eligible when:
  • they have completed at least 12 graded units and
  • have achieved a UC cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher.

Once in the program, students remain in good honors standing as long as the cumulative GPA remains at 3.5 or better. All eligible students are automatically notified by letter and monitored quarterly.

Honors Seminar - TMC 20

The Honors Seminar is offered every quarter and is open to all class levels of honors students. The seminar meets for one hour a week during five to seven weeks of the quarter. This is a small group discussion section facilitated by faculty or visiting guest lecturers. Additionally this group of students meets informally and chats with the provost and guest lecturers about issues of interest to honors students.  More ...

Honors Events & Activities

Honors activities and events are geared to introduce students to the excitement of pioneering research and innovative scholarship in all disciplines and to create opportunities for discussion on public issues with locally and nationally known figures. These activities are an excellent way for students to meet faculty, expand their horizons, and plan for future coursework.

Marshall Special Projects - TMS 199

The TMC special project affords honors students credit bearing research opportunities. For example a past project involved a group of honors students who researched, compiled and published a document on speeches by Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Scholarships, Fellowships & Grants

Scholarships administered by Student Financial Services are: 

  • Regents’ Scholarships
    These are awarded for the University and the Chancellor of the San Diego campus with consideration given to those with academic excellence. A scholar may receive an honorarium or stipend for each year of appointment. Privileges, such as guaranteed on-campus housing and preferred enrollment, are also offered to Regents’ Scholars.

  • President’s Undergraduate Fellowship
    This program is designed to assist unusually talented undergraduates to carry out special studies and projects under faculty supervision. Projects may include original research or other creative activities.

  • U.S. Grants
    U.S. Grants is a student-run organization which can provide financial support and organizational structure for individual research projects. In addition, it produces the UC San Diego Journal of Undergraduate Research, which provides a forum for publication of undergraduate research.

Honor Recognition

There are many ways Thurgood Marshall College students receive recognition for academic excellence. Students who complete the Honors Seminar earn the notation “Thurgood Marshall College Honors Seminar” on their transcript for each quarter of participation.

Membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the national honors society founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, is available to qualified UC San Diego graduates. Membership is conferred for high scholastic standing and is determined by vote of the chapter according to a student’s scholarship record.

The University confers three levels of honors at graduation: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude. The determination of the various honors levels is based on a percentage of the graduating class. No more than 14 percent of the graduating class will receive these honors.

Each year at graduation, Thurgood Marshall College presents the Provost’s Award to a graduate chosen in recognition of superior academic achievement and breadth of scholarship. A Thurgood Marshall College committee selects the awardee based upon units completed at UC San Diego, the grade point average, and the breadth of scholarship.

Departmental Honors

There are many departments and programs at UC San Diego which offer courses of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with honors in the major. Departmental Honors students work under the guidance of UC San Diego’s distinguished faculty to explore their academic interest in more depth than is possible within the requirements of the conventional major. Most departmental programs require a Senior Thesis.

One of the primary goals of TMCHP is to meet the ever-changing needs of Thurgood Marshall College students. We are pleased and excited by the services we are already able to offer, and the future holds great promise. We encourage and welcome new ideas and will seriously consider any suggestions for the development of academic enrichment opportunities.

The Thurgood Marshall College Honors Program addresses one of the greatest responsibilities and challenges of higher education: educating students of exceptionally high academic achievement. TMCHP provides the environment and organization within which to pursue individual excellence.
