Public Service Option
– Gompers and Preuss School Projects
Thurgood Marshall College students are encouraged to take advantage of the Public Service option. Involvement in public service enables students to draw connections between formal education and the political and moral choices beyond the classroom. Volunteer both on and off campus. Participate in public service for academic credit by enrolling in either:
- AIP 197, offered through the Academic Internship Program at Warren College
- TEP 130, TEP 136 and 139, or TEP 138 and 139, offered through the Teacher Education Program (as of this year, Education Studies) as part of its Partners at Learning (PAL) program .
- Marshall College also offers a Public Service Minor to all UCSD students in good standing. Students first complete TMC 15 and then choose an area of specialization from among Education, Government, Social Issues, or Health.
Thurgood Marshall College has entered into public service partnerships with three local public schools:
- the Preuss School here on the UCSD campus
- the Gompers Preparatory Academy in San Diego.

Former TMC Provost Cecil Lytle played a central role in the founding of Preuss and Gompers Charter Schools. The purpose of these partnerships is to help build high-quality schools with high expectations for youngsters who have traditionally not been well prepared for university study in the public school system.UCSD/TMC students serve as tutors and mentors under the supervision of the teaching staff at Preuss and Gompers. You can make a big difference in the long-term opportunities available to these children by volunteering your time and expertise to help level the playing field for them.
