2017-2018 Dean's Intern

Being selected as a Dean’s Intern at Thurgood Marshall College is an outstanding way to develop professionally as well as personally.

Dean’s Interns have the opportunity to be involved in multiple aspects of Marshall College Student Affairs programs and events that occur throughout the academic year under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of Student Activities. This includes developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs, events, and projects that benefit the Marshall College student community and reinforce the ideals of being a Scholar & Citizen.

All interns share responsibility for administrative tasks that ensure a professional and efficient environment in the office. Candidates must be strong team players and communicators who understand how to prioritize tasks and manage their time well.

Additionally, candidates must successfully demonstrate their commitment to the Marshall College philosophy of Scholar & Citizen. The Dean’s Intern position term is September 28, 2017 through June 15, 2018.

Dean’s Intern(s) are expected to assist in the following areas

  • Contribute to and develop student programming via the Dean’s Intern program
  • Brainstorm and plan events and programs for the Marshall College community in collaboration with other Interns, student organizations, campus resource centers, and Marshall professional staff
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and evaluation of Marshall College special projects as needed
  • Serve as a resource to the Marshall College student community, including commuter and transfer populations
  • Contact vendors, presenters, and volunteers by phone and/or written correspondence
  • Provide administrative support to staff as needed (Front desk, answering the phone, and assisting College visitors)

  • Lead Intern (1 or 2) (paid) (Hired from 2017 cohort)

  • Assistant to the Coordinator of Student Activities

    The Assistant to the Coordinator of Student Activites liaises between the Dean’s Interns and CSA. Responsibilities include:

    • Collecting availabilities and creating the quarterly intern work schedule
    • Communicating and overseeing events and program planning amongst the interns
    • Planning intern bonding activities and student para-professional development activities 
  • Community Intern (3)

    Community Intern programming will focus on exploring and educating students on the diversity of identities within the Marshall community.

    • Participation in seasonal event committees (Marshallpalooza, Spirit Week, Cultural Celebration) as needed
    • Collaboration on programming and events with other Interns and departments
    • Outreach to UC San Diego resource centers for programming as appropriate on issues related to social justice, equity, and inclusion
  • Each One Reach One Intern (2)

    The Each One Reach One (EORO) Interns are charged with coordinating the EORO Mentorship program.

    • Creating the Mentor/Mentee cover letters/applications
    • Publicizing the program year-round
    • Planning community-building and social programs to foster relationship development between Mentors and Mentees
    • Overseeing quarterly check-ins between Mentors and Mentees
    • Following up on Mentor/Mentee issues and challenges 
  • Graphic Design Intern (1) (paid) (Graphic Designer Intern Application)

    The Graphic Design Intern, under the direction of the Program Assistant, is charged with creating graphics and visuals for programming and activities related to the Dean’s Interns, Marshall student organizations, and Marshall seasonal committees (LC3, Semiformal, etc)

    • Assisting with Marshall Memos as needed
    • Creating graphics and visuals, flyers, posters, shirts, giveaways
    • Individual may be requested to create graphics for other offices within Marshall College
    • Assisting with programming and event planning as needed
  • Special Events (2 or 3)

    The Special Events Interns are in charge of planning and executing a wide variety of educational, community building, and social programs for the TMC student body.

    • Planning programs that align with a specific month’s focus (e.g., Mental Health Awareness Month, National Hispanic Awareness Month, LGBT History Month)
    • Planning Family Weekend in Fall Quarter under the guidance of the Program Assistant
    • Identifying student needs and designing programming accordingly
    • Collaborating with other Interns as needed to design and execute superior educational, community building, and social programs
  • Commuter Intern (1)

    The Commuter Intern is charged with seeking ways to engage with the Commuter student population at Marshall College.

    • Identifying Commuter student needs and designing appropriate programming and events to address those needs
    • Collaborating as need with Commuters At Marshall (CAM) to meet Commuter student needs
    • Assisting with program planning and event execution as needed with the other Interns
    • Liaising with the All-Campus Commuter Board to gather information and identify areas of growth and partnership
  • Transfer Intern (1)

    The Transfer Intern is charged with seeking ways to engage with the Transfer student population at Marshall College.

    • Identifying transfer student needs and designing appropriate programming and events to address those needs
    • Collaborating as needed with Transfer & Re-Entry Students (TRES) to meet Transfer student needs
    • Assisting with program planning and event execution as needed with the other Interns
    • Liaising with the All-Campus Transfer Association (ACTA) as needed to gather information and identify areas of partnership.
