Hi, everyone! Happy week 4! I’m very excited by several things that are happening right now! Hopefully you have seen the Chancellor’s announcement that there will be an in person component to commencement this year! I’m very excited to see at least some of our graduating students in person! I’m also thrilled that this year’s all-campus Commencement speaker is Alicia Garza. Alicia is a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, and is a Marshall College alum. Although Alicia wasn’t chosen because it’s Marshall’s 50th, I can’t think of a better speaker for the campus during our 50th year commencement!
The other thing I’ve been very excited about is a symposium on Enhancing the Black Student Experience, which is being held next week. This symposium is all about helping our Black students to have a great experience at UC San Diego, and is meant for members of the community (students, faculty, and staff) to come away with things that they can do to ensure that our Black students have a great learning experience. A couple of the sessions are probably geared more toward faculty (e.g., there is a session on Academics that’s all about how to create an inclusive classroom, and what faculty can do to support students. But there are also sessions on campus safety and what members of the community can do (and not do) to ensure the safety of our Black students, there’s a session on increasing access to UC San Diego for Black students, and there is a session on resources to help Black students transition to a career or higher education once they graduate. I think it will be great, and if you want to know what you can do to support Black students, I encourage you to attend.
I also wanted to remind everyone that next week is the deadline for applying for the TRELS program for next summer. I’ve already gotten several really interesting questions from students with great, creative ideas, so I’m excited to see what you all come up with! Also check out the Thurgood Thursdays IG Live that I did with Tyler Rogers, who administers the TRELS program last week!
Best wishes,
