Hi, everyone,

Last week, the campus hosted a week-long series of symposia on Enhancing the Black Student Experience. I was fortunate to be able to serve on the planning committee for that initiative, and it was a fantastic opportunity to think about actions that all of us as a community could take to improve the experience of our Black students. Students did not hold back in being honest about their experiences, and attendees worked hard to come away with specific actions they could take. During the week, I reflected on the foundation of Marshall College (as I have been doing all year, because of our Anniversary), and one of the things I committed to doing is celebrating Black and LatinX excellence, in keeping with our founding principles. One way to do that is to celebrate the achievements of our Black and LatinX students. So, to start this, I would like to use this opportunity to celebrate Kennedy Cofield.

Kennedy is a 2nd year Human Developmental Sciences Major. She was the student Chair for last week’s symposium. In addition, Kennedy is a member of the UC San Diego dance team and an outstanding student. The symposium was a huge success. Over 100 attendees were present to hear opening remarks about students’ experience and for sessions on pre-matriculation, campus safety, retention & climate, academics, & post-graduation support.

Congratulations to Kennedy for her leadership and the success of the symposium!

Best,

Provost Carver

The EORO Coordinator will work alongside Marshall College professional staff to recruit and pair up prospective student mentees and mentors, provide social and community-building opportunities for members, and otherwise plan for structured activities such as off-campus trips, bonding, and community service events with the EORO community that bring mentors/mentees closer together; educate students on campus resources; and make the EORO experience a memorable one.
