Hi, everyone.

I hope your Winter Quarter is going well so far. As always in this remote situation (and really always), if you’re struggling because of the pandemic, remote learning, or anything else, please feel free to reach out to me or our support team (Dean Amber Vlasnik, Dean Clare Harrington via VAC, or Acting Director of Residential Life Juan Lopez). Things in the pandemic seem like they are finally turning a corner on campus in San Diego county. This is in large part due to your actions in following public health guidance, social distancing, wearing masks, getting tested frequently, etc. Thank you so much, and please keep it up! It’s getting better, but until we can get everyone vaccinated, (hopefully quickly), we need to stay vigilant. If you want to do more, you can even volunteer to help with the county vaccination efforts at Petco Park.

On another note, do you have a project you would like to do outside the classroom? It could be a work of art, it could be a research project in a lab, it could even be a public service project. Maybe you have a DOC 3 project you proposed years ago and would like to see your solution to an issue really happen. If this sounds like you, please consider applying for the TRELS program. Applications for Spring Quarter are open now. TRELS is a program sponsored by the Colleges and the Academic Enrichment Programs office, and the goal is to provide experiential learning opportunities to students who may face obstacles to participating in those opportunities. Maybe you are a first gen student, like me, and you didn’t even know you could do research with a faculty member. I got really lucky that someone told me that when I was an undergrad. Or maybe you have to keep a job and don’t have enough time in the day to do something “extra”. TRELS is made for you! The requirements are minimal (a 2.5 or better GPA, and a faculty mentor, who we can help you find). Applications are due February 11, and I’m happy to help anyone who has questions about the program (or see the above link).
