Happy Week Seven, everyone,
I hope your quarter is going as well as can be expected. Things on the covid front seem to be going well still. My weekly updates from the medical school and epidemiology people have become far less frightening. That means that what you are doing is working! Definitely keep it up though - the one part of those briefings that is still frightening has to do with the new variants that are circulating. The way the experts put it, the more the virus spreads, the more it mutates. So it’s definitely essential to continue masking and social distancing as you have been, even though things are looking up and vaccines are coming. Speaking of vaccines, volunteers may still be needed to help at the vaccine sites (RIMAC and Petco Park). I’m hearing mixed things about whether they have enough people - I’ve heard that they do at Petco, but I’ve also heard a couple people say they may need more people at RIMAC. If you are interested, the link is here. You do not have to have any medical knowledge; they have multiple roles that they need people for that do not require you to be medical personnel.
If you identify as Black, Indiginous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC), I want to call your attention to an event that Marshall is hosting in a couple weeks. In this “Meet the Boss” event, BIPOC Alumni who are in the workforce will participate in a panel discussion about career transitions as an underrepresented person. Here’s the description: "The college has partnered with the Student Alumni Associates and their Meet the Boss program to address a topic of conversation that students of color typically don’t have access to prior to entering the workforce: The implicit bias they will likely face while job hunting and in their early career. Join us in this open discussion with alumni on how they've navigated their early careers. Open to all UC San Diego undergraduate students."
And here is a list of the alumni panelists: Porsia Curry '09, Director of the UC San Diego Black Resource Center Sana Meghani '11, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Catalyst:Ed Linda Rivera '11, Digital News and Social Media Specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Marlene Scott '70, Retired Business Owner and Educator
You can find a registration link here. This event is open to all UC San Diego undergraduate students, so please tell your friends. I’m so grateful to these alumni for giving their time, and I think this will be a very helpful event, so I’d love to see a big turnout!
Best,
Provost Leslie Carver |
