Happy Week 5, everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well and managing your midterms! We officially launched our 50th Anniversary Celebrations. So far we are very excited! We have launched the initiative to address health disparities; the first meeting was a couple of weeks ago, where we learned about health disparities in the San Diego region and we were also inspired by hearing from students who have done their own projects to address health disparities through Intersectional Health Project - San Diego (a student org started by a Marshall student several years ago to address border region health, environment, and other issues). The next meeting for this initiative is tonight; we will be discussing the Public Service Minor and how it can help students address health disparities. Our guest will be Dr. Anita Raj, who heads the health professions wing of the minor, a student panel of current and former Public Service Minor students, a discussion of how the minor can help students start initiatives, and a discussion of possible ideas for projects to address health disparities.

In case you missed it, we had a fantastic panel of alumni from the founding of Marshall College! They talked about what drove their activism that led to the founding of the Third College, and they addressed how Marshall is relevant in the current challenging times. It was incredibly inspiring! We are planning to continue to have events with our amazing alumni throughout the year. Videos from both these events, and all events going forward are located on the Marshall 50th Website. Please take a look if you are interested but haven’t been able to attend!

I want to thank all of you who are living and taking in person classes on campus this quarter. You’ve done an amazing job of staying safe. UC San Diego still is leading the way on testing and keeping virus numbers down. There have been relatively few cases and no major outbreaks, which I think can be attributed to the excellent job our students have been doing getting tested, social distancing, and wearing masks. For up to date guidance on University and Residential Policies, visit the Return to Learn website.

This week, as I’m sure you know, is an important election. Several units on campus are planning events for students to be able to prepare for, process, and respond to the events of tomorrow. Please keep in mind our Principles of Community when you are in community with others on campus or virtually. Here are some resources from campus you can check out, and also be on the lookout for Marshall College events:

- Free Expression at UC San Diego
- Activities around campus
- Voting on Campus

Best,

Provost Leslie Carver
