Happy Week 9, everyone! I hope everybody had a safe and happy Fall Break. Can you believe it’s almost the end of Fall Quarter? It’s been a pretty strange, weird, and amazing quarter. We had a fantastic Marshall Week; there were so many truly fantastic events. Many of them will be on the 50th Anniversary webpage, and I encourage you to check them out if you didn’t get a chance to attend.
Obviously, this has also been a weird quarter academically. I’m extremely impressed by how well you’ve adapted to this “normal”. In my own class, TMC 2, my students have been phenomenal about managing their learning in the remote environment, and they’ve also been very helpful to me as I try to learn Canvas and associated technologies (sorry about that breakroom/chat/messaging snafu, everyone!). You should all be very proud, and you are near the end! Hang in there, you can do this thing! Next quarter, unfortunately, will likely be more of the same. We are trying to get more classes in the outdoor tents that you will have seen if you’re on campus, on Revelle Plaza and Warren Mall, and they are trying to find more spaces for “tent classrooms” elsewhere on campus. If you’re craving in person instruction, and you’re in San Diego, I’d encourage you to give those a try. Outdoor spaces are very safe, especially, it turns out, in La Jolla (being on top of a bluff = windy, and windy = very low virus transmission). Last week I was able to attend the discussion section of my class that’s being held in person, and I’d forgotten what a great experience is just to be face to face with students (even when you’re all wearing masks).
I hope in addition to your coursework, you are all finding ways to unwind and take care of yourselves as well. One thing I’ve been doing lately is a lot of baking! When we were on campus, one of my favorite places to go was Art of Espresso - they have fantastic coffee and great scones (I hope they get to open in early January as planned). Anyway, I was missing their scones so I decided to learn to make some. Last week, I did an Instagram Live with Shayna, and taught her how to do them. Feel free to check out the session through our college instagram account: @yourtmcfamily
Lastly, it’s my birthday today! Drop me a line and let me know when yours is, and I’ll send you virtual happy birthday greetings!
