Welcome back everyone! I hope that everyone had a very restful Spring Break, and that your classes so far for Spring have been going well!

From what I have learned in various meetings, things are going quite well on the pandemic front. You’ve all done a fantastic job with testing, etc., and as a result all of our numbers are quite low, with very few student cases, both among students on campus, but also those who live off campus. Look for a very exciting message regarding benefits to the Basic Needs Hub as a result of all of your great work. The other exciting thing is that effective April 15, everyone over age 16 will be eligible for getting the vaccine. It’s really important for you to get vaccinated as soon as you can to help with herd immunity and stop the spread of the virus. I’ve had both my shots now, and it was pretty easy - there’s an amazing setup at RIMAC for doing vaccinations. Look out for an announcement on this too.

Another exciting thing is commencement. There will be an announcement coming very soon about a limited in person commencement! If you are graduating, and you are or will be in San Diego, you may be able to attend a commencement ceremony. Unfortunately, no guests will be allowed, but there will be an in person component for just you. It will be of great help if you are planning on attending, if you get your vaccine as soon as possible! Planning for this is happening fast, so be on the lookout for an announcement soon.

Finally, I’m excited to announce the opening of the Thurgood Marshall College Scholarship application. Five scholarships of up to $1000 will be awarded. This scholarship program benefits Marshall students with projects in any area, including Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and STEM fields. Applicants must have a GPA of above 3.5. Idea projects will reflect Marshall’s Scholar and Citizen philosophy. I’m also excited to share that due to a generous gift from a Marshall alum, we are reserving one of the scholarships for a student in Economics and/or Data Science. If you have an idea for a project, please submit an application! The due date is April 30.
