Hi, all!

Huge congrats on making it through this strange academic year! I know it’s been incredibly challenging, and you should all be proud of yourselves, whether it was a breeze or even if it didn’t go as planned - simply finishing is a major achievement. I hope we’ve been able to support you and your needs. I wish that I was able to do more because I know students have faced unprecedented challenges. I look forward to welcoming everyone back to campus next year (if you’re not graduating) and rebuilding some of the community we may have lost over the remote year.

In wrapping up the year, we are also wrapping up our celebration of Marshall’s 50th Anniversary. Although everything had to be remote, I think it’s been a fantastic and inspiring year. A few memories that stand out for me are our founding class alumni panel, John Marshall panel, reading Alicia Garza’s book for ThurGood Reads, the creation of the Health Disparities Initiative, and a panel webinar with Dr. Angela Davis. My hope for that event is that Dr. Davis challenges us to continue her work in the founding of the college.

I also wanted to take a minute to congratulate some Marshall students on their recent achievements. Muir College awards scholarship funding by Jim and Julie Lin for students working in sustainability. This year is the first year of this award, and the winner was a Marshall student, Kasandra Valladolid, who formed an organization to address environmental disparities. Kortni Washington, another Marshall student, received an Honorable Mention. Congrats to both on their achievements!

This week’s featured student for Black/LatiinX excellence is Christian Johnson. Christian is a graduating Marshall student. Although he is a Political Science major, Christian has been very involved in theater during his time at UC San Diego. He founded Found Spaces, which is a student organization that provides opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background to have a safe space for performance in theater and film. Christian has also been involved in supporting Black students on campus. Most recently, he gave a powerful reading of student testimonials for the Enhancing the Black Student Experience symposium. He’s also been the recipient of many awards for his work, including the Marshall College Scholarship and the TRELS Scholarship. Thank you for everything you do, Christian.

That's all for now. Hope you all have a great summer.

Best,
Provost Carver

Marshall Speaker Series presents Angela Y. Davis
June 3rd | 5 pm (PST)
Zoom

“[The] College would never become the revolutionary institution we had originally projected. Concessions were going to be inevitable…The most important responsibility resting with us was to ensure that whoever became involved in the college – students and faculty alike, carried on the legacy of the struggle out of which the idea of Lumumba-Zapata was born."-Angela Davis

Join us in a moderated conversation with Dr. Davis as we explore the history of the College and ways to build on this legacy beyond the college's 50th milestone year.
