Transfer Orientation

Welcome to the Thurgood Marshall College family and UC San Diego community!

Your journey to Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego begins when you accept your offer and receive your Enrollment Checklist. Be sure to activate your UC San Diego student email account early to stay connected and informed. 

Thurgood Marshall College Orientation consists of three components:

Step 1 | COMPLETE: New Triton Advising Portal

The NewTriton Advising Portal is housed in the Virtual Advising Center (VAC). New Triton Advising must be completed by Sunday, July 16, 2023.

You will be able to complete the following in the VAC:

  • Submit your academic background, including Advanced Placement (AP) scores, International Baccalaureate (IB) scores, placement test information, and/or transfer coursework
  • Connect directly with advising staff to ask enrollment-related questions through Online Advising, which opens June 15.

Step 2 | REGISTER for Marshall College Transfer Orientation

Marshall College Transfer Orientation is a mandatory program that provides incoming students an overview of resources, involvement opportunities, and additional information to support your transition to college life. You must register for your College Orientation sessions by Friday, July 28, 2023.

Registration for Orientation opens mid-May on the Colleges Orientation Registration ("COR") Website. Spaces per session are limited.

Step 3 | PARTICIPATE in Marshall College Transfer Orientation

Your Marshall College Transfer Orientation experience is led by an Orientation Leader (OL), who is a current UC San Diego student. During orientation, you will learn about Thurgood Marshall College's rich history, values, and traditions and deepen your understanding of academic support and campus resources, as well as explore co-curricular opportunities. 

Participation is required for all parts of orientation. Thurgood Marshall College Orientation has a synchronous in-person Orientation program and asynchronous CANVAS modules.

Synchronous Thurgood Marshall College Orientation has a 1-day Orientation program, in which you will connect with your Orientation Leader and fellow incoming students.

Students must select one of the following two sessions. The dates and times (Pacific Standard Time) are listed below.

In-Person Sessions:

Session 101: Wednesday, September 20, 2023*
Session 102: Monday, September 25, 2023

*This session is designed for commuter students but all are welcome.


Asynchronous: In addition to attending the two synchronous sessions, incoming students are required to complete a series of assignments on Canvas. Canvas is UC San Diego's Learning Management System. Canvas will open on August 21, 2023.

From May through September, you will receive emails with important information and approaching deadlines. Be sure to check your UC San Diego email account regularly. Follow the timeline below for important dates and deadlines. *Dates subject to change. Please check back regularly for updates.*

Do it NOW
  • Activate your UC San Diego email account by visiting http://acms.ucsd.edu. All official University correspondence, including your course enrollment, will be sent to your UC San Diego email ONLY. UC San Diego email is the University's official method of communication.
  • Review Health Requirements for students and provide necessary documentation by provided deadlines.
  • For those students interested in on-campus housing, please review the Housing website for additional information
June 15
  • The College Orientation Registration site opens! Register for Orientation before the July 28 deadline. After this date a $25 late fee may be assessed.
    • Attending the Transfer Student Orientation Program is mandatory and essential to your success at UC San Diego
  • The New Triton Advising site opens! Here you will need to input your Academic Information by July 16. You can begin contacting your major department academic advisor and college academic advisor.
    • Follow directions posted by your major department in the "Graduation and Academic Information" tab on New Triton Advising regarding how to contact your major advisor to begin planning your fall schedule.
    • If your major department did not post instructions in the "Graduation and Academic Information" tab on New Triton Advising, or you have not been contacted by your major department, please go to the Department Undergraduate Advisors List for information on how to contact their office in order to plan your schedule.
    • Marshall College academic advisors and major department advisors will be available to answer your questions through the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) "Ask a Question" Tab.*Please note that over the summer only online advising is available as Advisors will not be able to take appointments.

May - Early July

  • Request your official high school transcript, any college transcripts, and any AP/IB scores are sent to the UC San Diego Admissions office.
  • Verify that your junior year (or prior) AP/IB scores are sent.
  • Go to the Campus Card Office website for information on how to submit your ID card photo online.

  • Mandatory Online Asynchronous CANVAS Marshall College First-Year Student Orientation Modules available.

  • Transfer Enrollment Period begins
  • Enrollment appointments are randomly assigned
  • It is imperative that you enroll during your appointment time; otherwise, you may not be able to secure seats in classes.
  • Please note that you cannot change your enrollment appointment time. No exceptions can be made.
September 6
  • Enrollment open to all Students (New and Continuing)
September 20-25
  • Mandatory Synchronous Marshall College First-Year Student Orientation Sessions begin.
    • Synchronous in person at Marshall College, UCSD
September 22
  • Triton Weeks of Welcome (TWOW) Programming and Marshall Welcome Week Programming begin.
September 28
  • Classes Begin!

If you are a new incoming International Student, some additional programs may be required. Please visit the International Students & Programs Office’s website for more information.

Have Your Plans Changed?

If you choose to decline your acceptance to UC San Diego, you must notify UC San Diego Admissions. Contact them by email at SIRDecline@ad.ucsd.edu or by phone at (858) 534-4831.

If you do not formally decline your acceptance, you will receive a bill for New Student Orientation. If you decline your acceptance after attending Fall Orientation, you will still be billed and are responsible for the fees owed.
