Honors Distinction

TMC Students have the opportunity to be acknowledged for their hard work in the classroom and through their co-curricular involvements.

Below is information regarding the various honorable distinctions available for TMC students at UC San Diego.

Latin Honors

The University confers three levels of honors at graduation: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude.

Eligibility is based on the University of California cumulative grade point average and completion of at least 72 letter graded units at the University of California. The determination of the various honors levels is based on a percentage of the graduating class.  No more than 14 percent of the graduating class will receive these honors.

University honors are recorded on diplomas and final transcripts, and candidacy is noted in the commencement program.

College Honors and Awards

The college seeks to recognize students for their high level of achievement and involvement while at Marshall College.

TMC Honors Program

The TMC Honors Program recognizes students who have performed exceptionally well in their academic pursuits. Honors program students may enroll in TMC 20, the Honors Seminar, and earn the distinction for each quarter that they participate in the course.

Graduating Senior Awards

Each year at graduation, Thurgood Marshall College presents the Provost’s Award to a graduate chosen in recognition of superior academic achievement and breadth of scholarship. A Thurgood Marshall College committee selects the awardee based upon units completed at UC San Diego, the grade point average, and the breadth of scholarship.

Currently, the college awards the following awards to graduating seniors:

  • Outstanding Senior Award
  • Outstanding Faculty Award
  • Provost’s Exemplary Scholarship Award
  • Alumni Award
  • Academic Advising Student Leadership Award
  • Dean's Outstanding Service Award
  • Oceanid's Award
  • Distinguished Senior Awards

Additionally, students across Marshall College are recognized during the Annual Scholar and Citizen reception, receiving cords recognizing their achievements in and outside of the classroom that they can wear during the commencement ceremony.

Departmental Honors

There are many departments and programs at UC San Diego which offer courses of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with honors in the major. Departmental Honors students work under the guidance of UC San Diego’s distinguished faculty to explore their academic interest in more depth than is possible within the requirements of the conventional major. Most departmental programs require a Senior Thesis. Please contact your academic department for more information
