New Student Orientation

Welcome to the Thurgood Marshall College family! It is a joy to welcome our newest scholars and their families to our community.

If you were unable to attend Marshall College Orientation, please contact immediately.

Orientation is a mandatory program for all incoming freshmen and transfer students, with an optional program for parents and family members, designed to help students and their families in their transition to UC San Diego and Marshall College. During Orientation, students and their families will:

  • Gain insight into the Marshall philosophy and academic mission
  • Meet new and current students, as well as staff and faculty
  • Discover how to be an involved citizen in the Marshall College community
  • Learn how family members can support their student during the transition to life at UC San Diego

New Student Orientation FAQs

When is New Student Orientation?
New Student Orientation, for incoming freshmen and transfer students, will take place on Tuesday, September 17th, Thursday, September 19th, and Friday, September 20th.  Students are only required to attend one of these dates.
First year students living on campus will move-in to their residences on Wednesday, September 18th.

Incoming students in other colleges are attending orientation specifically for transfers or new freshmen. Why is Marshall’s program different?
The Marshall College Orientation is designed to build a cohesive Marshall community.  While our program supports the varying needs of our incoming student populations, it provides all incoming students with an opportunity to build connections across class levels.

What should I bring to New Student Orientation?
Students should bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated for the day and an open-minded attitude!

What should I wear?
Students will be walking around the UC San Diego campus during Orientation, so comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. Hats, sunscreen, and other heat protection items are also encouraged.

How do I pay for New Student Orientation?
The Marshall College New Student Orientation program is mandatory for all incoming UC San Diego students. As a self-supporting program, the Orientation fee covers expenses for materials, publications, mailings, meals, staffing, as well as Welcome Week activities. The Orientation "Program Fee" will be charged to each student's account and will appear alongside registration fees on the fall quarter student billing statement. Please do not send a check to pay for the Student Orientation Program.
If eligible, the cost of the orientation program is considered in determining student financial aid awards paid in the fall quarter.

What is the orientation hold?
Orientation is a mandatory program. All students will have an Orientation hold placed on their account until they complete their Orientation registration.

What will students do after they move-in if they are not attending Orientation?
Marshall College has a variety of programs designed for new students to attend beginning Wednesday, September 18th through Wednesday, September 25th! Information about programs for New Students will be available in September.

I’m a commuter student. Which orientation is best for me to attend?
Commuter students are welcome to attend any of the three orientation dates. Please note that the orientation dates of 9/19 and 9/20 may be more impacted because students living on campus will have already moved in.

I’m an incoming freshman student who is planning to live on-campus. Which orientation is best for me to attend?
Residential students are recommended to sign up for the Thursday or Friday orientation dates (9/19 or 9/20). If you do choose to sign up for an orientation date before this, you will need to find a place to stay for the time before move-in.

I’m an incoming transfer student who is planning to live on-campus. Which orientation is best for me to attend?
Residential students are recommended to sign up for the Thursday or Friday orientation dates (9/19 or 9/20).
Incoming transfer students that are residing on campus will have the option to select their move-in date when viewing their housing information in August.  We encourage students who wish to move-in early to select a move-in date prior to their Orientation program.

I’m an international student. When should I arrive to campus?
We recommend that international students should arrive at least two (2) days before their scheduled Orientation program. This will allow ample time to get situated and adjust to any time zone differences.
If you plan to reside on campus, we recommend selecting the September 20th orientation date.

Will there be interpreters for any of the orientation sessions?
Students can request ASL or other accommodations from the Office for Students with Disabilities. Unfortunately, we cannot provide language interpreters (e.g., Spanish, Chinese) for students or families during the programs. While some orientation leaders are fluent in languages other than English, the program is in English.

I cannot attend New Student Orientation.  What should I do?
Please email as soon as possible.  As New Student Orientation is a mandatory program, a hold will be placed on your student account after the fall enrollment period at the end of August.

I need to change my orientation date.  What should I do?
Please email to request to change your orientation date.  You will be provided with an online form, which you will need to complete to change your orientation date.
