Dean of Academic Advising

Emily Gonzales

Emily graduated from UC San Diego’s John Muir College with a B.S. in Psychology and earned her M.A. in Counseling with a specialization in College Counseling and Student Development from the University of San Diego. She has held several advising and leadership roles at UC San Diego, including undergraduate advisor for the Department of Computer Science, undergraduate program coordinator for the Department of Cognitive Science, and senior academic advisor and assistant dean of academic advising at Thurgood Marshall College. As Dean of Academic Advising at Marshall College, Emily leads efforts to support student success through comprehensive academic guidance, program development, and collaborative advising initiatives.

Learning about her students through their stories—and how those stories shape their experiences at UC San Diego—is central to Emily’s approach to academic advising. She is passionate about helping students discover their interests and strengths by encouraging self-advocacy and personal responsibility.

Her advice to students: “There is always something new to learn. Be patient in the process and keep moving forward.”
