Honors Distinction
TMC Students have the opportunity to be acknowledged for their hard work in the classroom and through their co-curricular involvements.
Below is information regarding the various honorable distinctions available for TMC students at UC San Diego.
Latin Honors
The University confers three levels of honors at graduation: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude.
Eligibility is based on the University of California cumulative grade point average and completion of at least 72 letter graded units at the University of California. The determination of the various honors levels is based on a percentage of the graduating class. No more than 14 percent of the graduating class will receive these honors.

Phi Beta Kappa
Membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the national honors society founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, is available to qualified UC San Diego graduates. Membership is conferred for high scholastic standing and is determined by vote of the chapter according to a student’s scholarship record.
College Honors and Awards
The college seeks to recognize students for their high level of achievement and involvement while at Marshall College.
TMC Honors Program
The TMC Honors Program recognizes students who have performed exceptionally well in their academic pursuits. Honors program students may enroll in TMC 20, the Honors Seminar, and earn the distinction for each quarter that they participate in the course.
Graduating Senior Awards
Each year at graduation, Thurgood Marshall College presents the Provost’s Award to a graduate chosen in recognition of superior academic achievement and breadth of scholarship. A Thurgood Marshall College committee selects the awardee based upon units completed at UC San Diego, the grade point average, and the breadth of scholarship.
Currently, the college awards the following awards to graduating seniors:

- Academic Advising Student Leadership Award
- Dean's Outstanding Service Award
- Oceanid's Award

Additionally, students across Marshall College are recognized during the Annual Scholar and Citizen reception, receiving cords recognizing their achievements in and outside of the classroom that they can wear during the commencement ceremony.
