Student Job Opportunities

Marshall College's Orientation Program employs the talents of a select group of continuing students to provide new Thurgood Marshall College students and their families with a satisfying and worthwhile experience during New Student Orientation.

Through the New Student Orientation Program, current Marshall students have the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills while working with the Thurgood Marshall College staff. Additionally, students will meet and work with new freshman and transfer students, develop leadership skills, make valuable contributions to Thurgood Marshall College, and have fun.

Student Employees are expected to be available for all spring quarter training dates, September training, and Orientation dates. Specific dates can be found in the drawers below.  

Orientation Leader

We are no longer hiring Orientation Leaders for the 2020 Program. 


Orientation Leader training will take place in two phases: Spring Quarter and September.
  • Spring Quarter Training: Thursdays, from 2:00-3:20 PM.
  • September Training: Specific Dates TBA.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation will take place the week of September 21. Selected Orientation Leaders must be available to work during these dates.

Welcome Week

Orientation Leaders may be asked to volunteer time (when possible) during Welcome Week (Dates TBA).

Program Coordination:

Implement the orientation program; develop team-building and involvement opportunities for new students and families; assist in the evaluation of the programs; participate in orientation skits concerning student life, residential life and academic life at UC San Diego.

Group Leadership:

Lead small group discussions; direct campus tours; establish a rapport with student, and demonstrate effective management of group dynamics and conflicts.

Role Modeling:

Display sensitivity to different cultures and an awareness of multi-culturalism; encourage commitment to academic success; and exemplify Marshall College spirit and pride.


Effectively communicate the Marshall College academic curriculum; and provide information on student development opportunities and other university services and programs.

Administrative Tasks:

Assist with various duties including orientation packets preparation, creation of directional signage, set-up of meeting areas, run errand, working check-in and check-out tables, and assist with the set up and clean up.

Application DUE: Thursday, January 16, 2020 11:59 p.m.

Individual Interviews: January 27 - February 12 

  • After review of applications, the Marshall College Leadership team will invite applicants, via their UCSD e-mail account, to interview for the Orientation Leader position.  Interviews will last approximately 30 minutes.

Orientation Assistant

Orientation Assistants

Orientation Assistants help to support the Orientation Programs in a more behind-the-scenes manner, coordinating room setups and teardowns, signage postings, maintaining event flow, and other day of support tasks. Orientation Assistants also work to create the "Extended Play" supplemental programming to Orientation, allowing new students the opportunity to become more comfortable in their community outside of the structure of Orientation Sessions.

Senior Orientation Leader

Senior Orientation Leaders

Marshall College Senior Orientation Leaders (SOLs) play an integral leadership role in the Marshall College Orientation program. As former Orientation Leaders (OLs), SOLs have a wealth of knowledge to help new and returning OLs successfully serve incoming Marshall College students. SOLs assist with various aspects of OL training and are the first point of contact between OLs and professional staff during Orientation.

Orientation Intern

Orientation Intern

The Orientation Intern works closely with our professional staff throughout the year on orientation logistics (meals, reservations, rentals, etc.) and plays a major role in our communication with students and families about the Marshall College Orientation Program. Applicants for this position should be creative and have strong administrative and organizational skills.
