Join the Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Team

 

The Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Team is a group of passionate student leaders that work tirelessly to build community, and welcome incoming students and families to the UC San Diego Community. Through the New Student Orientation Program, current Marshall students have the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills while working with the Thurgood Marshall College staff. Additionally, students will meet and work with new freshman and transfer students, develop leadership skills, make valuable contributions to Thurgood Marshall College, and have fun.

Student Employees are expected to be available for all spring quarter training dates, September training, and Orientation dates. Specific dates can be found in the drawers below.  

All students staff positions are Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Approved opportunities at UC San Diego and work study eligible.

Student Job Opportunities

Orientation Leader

Orientation Leaders ("OLs") are at the forefront of the Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Program. OLs undergo extensive training on a number of topics, including academic advising, student life, involvement opportunities, campus resources, and professional development. OLs are generally responsible for:

  • Coordinating and implementing the Orientation Program
  • Facilitate small-groups for incoming students to foster community
  • Role model to incoming students by displaying cultural humility, encouraging academic success, and exemplifying Thurgood Marshall College spirit and pride
  • Effectively communicate the Marshall College academic curriculum; and provide information on student development opportunities and other university services and programs.
  • Assist in additional logistical and administrative tasks to ensure the Orientation Program runs smoothly

Expected Time Commitment: 4 hrs/week (during training) and 30 hrs/week (during fall training & orientation season).

Senior Orientation Leader

Senior Orientation Leaders ("SOLs") play an integral leadership role in the Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Program. As former Orientation Leaders (OLs), SOLs have a wealth of knowledge to help new and returning OLs successfully serve incoming Marshall College students. SOLs assist with various aspects of OL training and are the first point of contact between OLs and professional staff during Orientation. SOLs are generally responsible for: 

  • Facilitating, coordinating, and developing training for the Orientation Leader team
  • Communicating between professional staff and the Orientation Team
  • Guiding OLs through the Orientation Program and ensuring everything runs smoothly
  • Interviewing and selecting the next cohort of Orientation Leaders

Expected Time Commitment: 8 hrs/week (during training) and 40 hrs/week (during orientation season).

The 2024 Senior Orientation Leader Application is currently NOT open.

Orientation Intern

Orientation Interns play an integral organizational and logistical role in the Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Program. As former Orientation Leaders, Orientation Interns use their experience and knowledge to manage all of the backend pieces of the Orientation Program. Orientation Interns are generally responsible for:

  • Managing and responding to student and parent inquiries via email
  • Manage the Orientation Program website, COMPASS, and Canvas pages
  • Collaborate with professional staff to develop the Orientation Program's branding and marketing
  • Assist the SOLs and professional staff with logistics and administrative tasks

Expected Time Commitment: 8 hrs/week (during training) and 40 hrs/week (during orientation season).

The 2024 Orientation Intern Application is currently NOT open.

Orientation Assistant

Orientation Assistants ("OAs") are the backbone of the Thurgood Marshall College Orientation Program. OAs work behind-the-scenes coordinating and managing a number of logistics to ensure the Orientation Program runs smoothly. OA's generally:

  • Coordinate program layouts, including setups, teardown, signage, etc.
  • Maintain event flow, including traffic, wayfinding, etc.
  • Develop "Extended Play" supplemental programming for the Orientation Program, enabling incoming students the opportunity to further engage with their new community outside of Orientation sessions.

Expected Time Commitment: 8 hrs/week (during training) and 30 hrs/week (during orientation season).
